Methadone was becoming a popular withdrawal treatment even as Timothy Leary was calling for people to “turn on, tune in, drop out.” Nixon declared a “war on drugs” and soldiers’ drug use in Vietnam shined a light on heroin abuse. The National Institute of Drug Abuse was founded in the 70s and the 80s ushered in the D.A.R.E. Program.
