First, if you cannot afford rehab, go to your physician and get a medical evaluation to see if you need hospitalization for detox. If you’re safe to remain as an outpatient, go to a 12 step meeting.
The 12 step program is an evidence-based approach that performs as well or better than many other therapies. You’ll be with people who are familiar with resources in your area. They can refer you to county funded, community supported, or other quality (and free) programs such as Salvation Army.
Free help is available, but the patient will still need to do some work to find it. Many of these programs have waiting lists and require the patient to call in to check for bed availability until something opens up. But it’s worth the time and effort to get the help you need for recovery.
